NEW YORK (CBS/AP) ― A 62-year-old replica sculpture of the flag raising on Iwo Jima won't be returning to Manhattan along with the aircraft carrier Intrepid following the ship's 18-month makeover, a newspaper reported.

The five-ton sculpture by Felix de Weldon served as a model for the Marine Corps War Memorial in Arlington, Va., and has been in the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum since 1995, The New York Times reported Tuesday.

Bill White, the president of the foundation that runs the Intrepid museum, said that in spite of raising $8 million to renovate the ship's interior before the vessel returns to its west side pier on Sept. 26, 2008, the foundation could not afford to buy the Iwo Jima sculpture.

The owner of the sculpture, Rodney Hilton Brown, has until September to remove it, and he is now searching for another museum to take the piece, which is coated with a bronze-tinged finish.

The Intrepid is in Staten Island undergoing a major refurbishment, including the installation of state-of-the art exhibits, before being returned to a rebuilt Pier 86 in the Hudson River.

The vessel is on target to reopen to the public on Veterans Day, Nov. 11, 2008.
