Thanks to millions of dollars and people working around the clock, the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum is back and open to the public.
The storied naval carrier, which served in the Pacific theater of World War II and in the Viet Nam War prior to serving as a floating museum on the Hudson, reopened Saturday at 10:00 a.m. following a ribbon-cutting
ceremony. Curators expect to serve 1 million visitors a year.
As soon as you walk in, there is a 50-foot video wall that makes you feel like you are at sea. A series of simulators let visitors experience what its like to fly a jet, steer the massive vessel, and be inside a space capsule.
On deck, there are 30 new aircraft proudly on display.
"We have 18 interactive exhibits where we can get up on, hands on. You have the steering wheel of an Intrepid. You can steer the ship. You can learn how to get in the cockpit and take simulator rides over Iraq and Afghanistan and understand what it is like to serve in our nation's military," said Bill White, president of the museum.
The Intrepid was renovated from top to bottom, and returned to dock on October 2.
