Inwood Blaze Ignites 4 Stores

Several Firefighters Suffer Minor Injuries

NEW YORK (CBS) ― A fast-moving fire in upper Manhattan early Friday morning started in a store along Sherman Avenue but quickly spread before firefighters could put it out. It was later brought under control after igniting four stores on the block.

Five firefighters suffered minor injuries but no one was in any of the buildings in Inwood.

As the thick black smoke came pouring out of the building, firefighters worked to get the three-alarm fire under control as quickly as possible.

More than 150 firefighters battled the blaze that broke out around midnight and by 3 a.m., it was finally under control.

The fire was doused from every direction to try to stop it from spreading along Sherman Avenue, but it was too late.

It appears the fire started in one store and then jumped to three neighboring stores and restaurants before the morning was over.

According to the fire department, the five injured firefighters were transported to area hospitals with minor injuries. No other injuries have been reported.

Now that the fire is out, investigators will work to determine how and where it actually started.
