CBS 2 has learned that Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has requested to visit ground zero during his visit to the United Nations next week in Manhattan. The outspoken president of Iran -- called the worst sponsor of terror in the world -- is making a two day trip to New York to address the UN Security Council.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg's office confirmed the request to CBS 2, but said that no heads of state could visit the pit at ground zero due to ongoing construction.
NYPD Comissioner Ray Kelly also confirmed that a request had been issued to the NYPD, and that the NYPD, secret service and representatives of the Iranian UN Mission are all negotiating plans for Ahmadinejad's request to visit the old World Trade Center site, according to WCBS News Radio 880.
"The fact that the city is considering the request is a slap in the face to 9/11 families considering they were almost not granted access to the site this past anniversary," said Dennis McKeon, a relative of a 9/11 victim.
While there's no direct connection between Iran and the 9/11 hijackers, Ahmadinejad is suspected of supplying and backing insurgents fighting U.S. forces in Iraq.
Visitors to the hallowed ground in lower Manhattan are also shocked, but actually say Ahmadinejad should come to ground zero.
"The president of Iran should come and see what their handywork has done for us," one New Yorker told CBS 2.
Added another New Yorker: "I think he should have been here six years ago to see what happened."
The NYPD issued this response a short time ago:
"The department said it had to turn down the only request they've received from the Iranian president. They said ground zero is closed to everyone due to construction and is especially off-limits to world leaders like Ahmadinejad because of security concerns."
