Lavish NYC Jailhouse Bar Mitzvah Not So Kosher
TROY, N.Y. (CBS) ―
A bar mitzvah held at a Manhattan jail for an inmate's son is at the center of multiple criminal investigations into special treatment of Jewish inmates.
Correction officers say that by the time of the Dec. 30 bar mitzvah, the detention center known as the Tombs had become a place where Jews could expect to be treated well because of the influence of the jail's rabbi.
That special treatment appeared to extend to the smallest of comforts.
Sometimes searches of Jewish inmates' cells would turn up unauthorized food like pistachios, rugelach and pastrami sandwiches.
The rabbi and one of the city's highest ranking uniformed correction officers resigned last week. Three other jail officials have been disciplined.
The average daily inmate population of the New York City Department of Correction is between 13,000 and 18,000.
