NJ Mom Gets 10 Years For Punching Infant To Death
MAYS LANDING, N.J. (CBS) ―
A "frustrated mom" who punched her infant daughter to death because the child was crying has been sentenced to 10 years in state prison.
Tammy Torres of Hamilton Township must serve 85 percent of her term before becoming eligible for parole. She also was ordered Friday to pay $2,362 to the state's Victims of Crime Compensation Office to cover the infant's funeral expenses.
Police found the 2-month-old girl unresponsive in her crib at Torres' apartment in January 2008. The infant was taken to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center's Mainland Campus, where she was found to have facial fractures and bleeding in her brain.
The child died two days later at a Delaware hospital.
Torres eventually admitted she punched the infant twice in the head out of frustration that her boyfriend wasn't around and the child was crying.
The Township is is the largest municipality, in size, in New Jersey.
