A Jersey City woman is fighting for her life after being sexually assaulted on the sidewalk, a brutal attack captured on surveillance video. The footage helped officers catch the two suspects, and now community leaders are calling for more cameras on the streets.
Police say the two suspects under arrest, Davon Gordon and Carlos Acosta, both 18, beat the woman at random on Sunday morning. The victim was assaulted so severely, she went into a coma. She was also robbed, before the thugs stripped her of her clothes and threw them over a fence.
The two suspects were caught thanks to the video taken from a nearby homeowner's private camera. At the top center of the footage, the figures of the two suspects witnesses told police were attacking the woman can be seen. Two brave Good Samaritans were then seen running to help the woman, before the suspects turned on them too, causing one man to go to the hospital. Eventually, the suspects are seen running off, but they so right in front of the camera.
"This was a physical beating by two individuals. She's been identified, at one point we had difficulty identifying her, but she's been identified," said Robert Kilduff of the Jersey City Police Department.
Rosalyn Browne is a director of the Communipaw Avenue Block Association. They have been trying for over a year to get cameras patched in to police headquarters, and not just video from the good citizens who went out and purchased surveillance on their own.
"I know they're slated to come to Communipaw Avenue so we just hope the implementation of that is very soon," she told CBS 2.
Word on the street is that the two suspects may have been smoking "dip" before the attack, which is when a marijuana cigarette is "dipped" in formaldehyde and then smoked. The resulting mix apparently makes a person feel like a superman.
The victim is being kept in a medically induced coma at Jersey City Medical Center and is listed in critical condition
