Jersey City Police were on alert Monday because of the mysterious odor.
On the Jersey City side, the mysterious chemical smell had residents feeling unsettled. PATH service from New Jersey to 33rd Street in Manhattan has been restored following a suspension because of the smell.
"I didn't know what it was, so I worried," said Jersey City resident Robert Domond. "The type of life we live in, anything is possible."
Matt Pierpont, who works for a Japanese bank in Jersey City, said, "What did it smell like? I'd say when you put on the stove before gas ignites, it's that kind of smell."
As a precaution, Pierpont an a few other coworkers headed from Jersey City to Wappingers Falls.
"We send a skeleton crew up to our disaster recovery site, just in case something happens," Pierpont said.
Also as a precaution, some PATH service was shut down, but later in the morning was restored.
While on a PATH train, Jersey City resident Walter Thompson overheard the news of the gas odor.
"A conductor there had his walkie-talkie on, and they said there was a smell coming from Jersey. It didn't make me feel too good," Thompson said.
