Prosecutors on Staten Island have charged a retired New York City police officer with murdering his ex-wife, who as a child and young woman sang pop songs as a member of the Kane Triplets.
John Galtieri, 61, has been in custody in South Carolina since Wednesday, when he was taken in for questioning about the shooting death of his former wife, Jeanne Kane, at a park-and-ride lot off the West Shore Expressway on Jan. 30.
A warrant for Galtieri's arrest on a charge of second-degree murder was issued Friday. In court that day, the retired officer said he intended to fight extradition to New York and complained that he hadn't been allowed to speak with a lawyer.
Kane, 58, was found shot in the head Tuesday in a lot where she had been waiting to pick up her daughter.
The same morning, Galtieri filed a lawsuit against his former wife in a Staten Island court -- one of a series of suits in which he contested the terms of their divorce.
Richmond County prosecutors and New York City police have so far declined to detail the evidence against Galtieri, but have said no murder weapon has been found.
As a child in the 1960s, Kane performed regularly with her Brooklyn-born sisters on TV variety shows including the Ed Sullivan Show and the Jack Benny Program.
Later, the triplets also recorded a vocalized version of the Mission Impossible theme song.
Kane was memorialized Saturday at a funeral service in Brooklyn.
Galtieri, who retired from the police department on a disability pension after suffering a back injury, filed for divorce from his wife in 1999. He came out on the losing end of the fight for the family's assets when she produced evidence that he had violently abused her for decades.
