Police have arrested a suspect accused of shooting and killing a Bronx livery cab driver on Sunday night, CBS 2 HD has learned.
Police say the driver, identified as 42-year-old Jose Pena-Seguira, was shot once in the head. It's the second time in a week a livery cab driver was gunned down.
The shooting occurred around 10:20 p.m. Sunday night.
The identity of the suspect has not yet been released.
There have been three fatal shootings involving cab drivers in just over three months, and the New York State Federation of Taxi Drivers is pressing elected officials to address violent crime in the Bronx.
"The Bronx has become the most unsafe borough for cabbies this year," NYS Federation of Taxi Drivers spokesman Fernando Mateo spokesman said Monday. "Drivers are simply scared and no one deserves to work under these conditions."
Mateo said elected officials "must all get involved in order to stop the killings in the Bronx. This must be a united front that condemns these murders against the working class."
Last week 46-year-old Ndiaye Amadau was shot and killed in the Bronx by one of his passengers. Police believe the passenger shot Amadau in an attempted robbery. The cab then bounced off a parked car and slammed into a silver car waiting for the light to change.
No arrests were made, but police are investigating a possible connection.
The fatal shootings come 3 and 1/2 months after cab driver Roberto Pinta, 37, was shot three times in the back during what police said was a failed robbery attempt by a passenger. A man was indicted in the May 10 shooting
