The parent company of KFC, Taco Bell and Pizza Hut said Friday it has asked a leading rat expert to review company standards at its New York City outlets following widely publicized rat problems at one of its restaurants.
Yum Brands, Inc. announced it was bringing on Bobby Corrigan after pre-emptively closing 10 New York City restaurants owned by franchisee ADF Cos., of Fairfield, N.J. Three other locations owned by ADF also were shut down this week by the city Health Department after inspectors found problems.
The closures came after video footage widely broadcast last week showed a dozen rats scampering across the floor of a Manhattan KFC-Taco Bell owned by ADF. That location, in Greenwich Village, was shuttered by the Health Department last week.
"We apologize to our customers and want to reassure them that we have been working around the clock to prevent this from happening again," Yum Brands executive Emil Brolick said in a statement Friday.
Corrigan is a world-renowned expert on rodent problems. He once spent months living in a rat-infested barn to better study the rodent's behavior, and he has taught at the New York City Rodent Control Academy.
