NYC Mom Heads To Court After Newborn Beating

Weeks-Old Boy Suffered Broken Bones, Internal Bleeding

QUEENS (CBS) ― A Queens mother was scheduled to appear in court Saturday to face charges for the brutal beating of her newborn infant.

Police said 23-year-old Kiama Paez brought her son Pablo to Elmhurst Hospital on Thursday with a broken leg, eight broken ribs, a fractured skull and bleeding of the brain.

The seven-week-old boy is now on life-support and may be brain dead.

Neighbors said they never saw any signs of abuse. "She appeared to be a good mom. I always saw her on the steps with her baby last summer," said neighbor Washington Berra.

That child was Paez's 16 month old, whom sources said was removed from the home by state officials in September and is now in foster care.

Paez could face up to 25 years in prison if convicted.
