19 LI Students, Teacher Fed Laxative In Doughnuts
HOLTSVILLE, N.Y. (CBS/AP) ―
A group of Long Island students got a leg-up on April Fools Day, but not before it landed them hands-down in deep trouble. It's being called a "sickening prank" at a Holtsville middle school in Suffolk County as five students face serious charges for lacing doughnuts with laxatives.
Suffolk County police, EMTs, and even fire rescue personnel raced to Sequoya Middle School where 19 students and a teacher reportedly ate the laced doughnuts, causing most of them to suffer the queasy effects that come from laxatives.
"My stomach's hurting," Dylan Caruso, one of the victims, told CBS 2. "I had to go to the bathroom a lot, went a few times."
The eighth-grade student suspects had purchased three dozen chocolate doughnuts, laced them with chocolate laxatives, and started handing them out in the hallways. They had apparently seen a similar prank on MTV. "It was like a piece of chocolate, covered with frosting to disguise it," said Deanna Tarasco, another victim.
Parents were called to pick some of the sick children up. "The kids who ate the doughnuts wanted to be picked up and taken to their pediatrician," said Nancy Hartigan, whose son also ate one of the doughnuts.
"We had five students who were involved in this 'prank,' who had taken little laxative pills and placed them in doughnuts. We counted 18 doughnuts," Sachem School District Superintendent Charles Murphy said.
Medics and Health Department officials treated all those who ate the donuts. "We have been observing them for a few hours. Most were sent home, most experienced mild abdominal cramps," Suffolk Health Department Dr. Winfred Wu said.
The school district stresses no one was seriously stricken. It is taking appropriate disciplinary action against the pranksters. All five juveniles were charged with tampering with a consumer product in the second-degree. They were released to their parents' custody and issued an appearance ticket for a future date.
