LIPA Chief To Kill Wind Farm Project
UNIONDALE, N.Y. (AP) ―
The head of the Long Island Power Authority says he will kill the plan to build a windmill farm off the coast of Jones Beach, because the project has gotten too expensive.
LIPA Chairman Kevin Law Wednesday says the cost for the 40 wind turbines has ballooned to $700 millonwhich is more than traditional forms of energy generation or even a new energy-efficient plant.
He tells Newsday he will recommend to LIPA trustees that the project be ended - when the board meets September 22nd.
He said he'll work with local wind-energy advocates to research possible wind proposals that "make economic sense."
Babylon Supervisor Steve Bellone its a victory for common sense and for the ratepayers of Long Island who would have borne the cost of the windmills.
When LIPA first announced the plan, it estimated the cost to be between $150 million and $200 million. The cost then jumped to $356 million when Florida Power and Light Company won the bid.
That cost has since doubled.
