LIRR Riders Happy With Trains, But Not Bathrooms

NEW YORK (AP) ― The trains are on time and the ride is smooth but some of the bathrooms at the Long Island Rail Road sure stink.

An annual customer survey gave the LIRR high marks. Its overall 2007 score was a 6.7 on a scale of 0 to 10 -- up from 6.6 in 2006.  That's the second-highest score ever since 1993's score of 6.8.

But bathroom cleanliness suffered. Riders gave the LIRR a score of 4.9.

LIRR President Helena Williams says she's aware of poorly ventilated restrooms at Penn Station. Renovation of Penn's bathrooms, including the ventilation, is scheduled to begin in July.
