Cat Chases Scaredy-Bear Up A Tree
by Jay Dow
WEST MILFORD, N.J. (CBS) ―
Check out these pictures. A black bear chased up a tree by a cat. No, really.
Yes, this black bear ended up high in the tree in West Milford, New Jersey. What's he running from? A tabby cat named Jack, who can be seen sitting comfortably at the base of the tree.
Neighbor Suzanne Giovanetti was standing in her West Milford backyard, snapping photos of Jack, Sunday, as he faced a black bear, chasing it up a 40-foot tree.
"He stared at the cat, and decided to run for it. And with the cat on his ---, basically ran for the next nearest tree," Giovanetti said.
Jack has twice chased bears up trees in his backyard. That's despite his having no front claws, and spending most of his life as a strictly indoor cat.
Jack is a cat's cat, a tabby with humble beginnings. He was rescued from a shelter by his current owner. And at ten years old, he proudly watches over his kingdom - seemingly well aware of his limitations.
Apparently, standing up to a black bear many times his size, is not one of them.
Giovanetti said, "Jack is the man. We expect a big fan club for Jack."
Jack has been de-clawed for a decade, but still regularly hunts rabbits, birds, and chipmunks.
"He's fearless. Yeah, I guess he's compensating for the no claws," neighbor Elisa Colombo said.
By the way, his owner says he also keeps her home mouse-free.
