L.I. Village On Edge After String Of Burglaries
Series Of Home Invasions In Rockville Centre Leaves Residents Living In Fear
ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (CBS) ―
A Long Island community is living in fear after a series of burglaries.
The string of crimes happened in Rockville Centre, and four of them occurred overnight. Most of the homes are in the upscale Canterbury section of Rockville Centre.
"It's not good," resident Jennifer said. "This is a safe area, it's kind of scary."
What's distressing, say neighbors, is that most of the homes have been entered while the families were sleeping upstairs.
Police say most of the homes hit were easy-entry burglars going through unlocked doors or windows. But at one home on Nottingham, the rear doors were forced open.
"I believe they jimmied their way through the back door," contractor Jarlath Byrne said.
On Thursday, Byrne was among the workmen who were replacing both the storm door and preparing to install a new back door at the home. The owner did not want to speak on camera.
One of the homes burglarized on Brower Avenue was entered through an unlocked entry in the rear, as was another a few blocks away.
"Of course, there's great concern about this," neighbor Carl DiPresso said.
Another woman, who didn't want to speak on camera, said the break-ins have gone on for weeks, and police confirm it.
"It's definitely a little scary," neighbor Albert Ouwerkerk said. "Keep your eyes open."
Police are advising residents to take the usual security precautions: make sure windows and doors are locked, and make sure the locks are strong and secure enough to do the job.
