Good Samaritans Rescue Woman From L.I. Canal

Cocco Family's Holiday To Be That Much More Memorable Thanks To James DiGiovanna And Jacob Miller

BRIGHTWATERS, N.Y. (CBS) ― Two Good Samaritans jumped into a canal in Brightwaters out in Suffolk County and rescued a woman from certain death on Friday. Very lucky to be alive is Islip Terrace resident Jennie Cocco, who lost control of her vehicle and drove into the canal on Concourse East near Montauk Highway.

County Worker Jacob Miller and Volunteer Asst. Fire Chief James DiGiovanna happened to be in the area, saw the partially submerged car and wasted no time jumping into the near freezing water.

"My first instinct was to help this person," DiGiovanna said.

He and Miller jumped in without any hesitation.

"The car was sinking very fast," DiGiovanna said. "Thank God the woman got the door open as we were screaming. She got herself out of the car and the car plunged in."

The two men got Cocco to the dock, as paramedics and other rescuers arrived.

Cocco was taken to Southside Hospital and treated for hypothermia. Her husband, Lenny, joined her there. He briefly left to personally seek out and thank the heroes.

"That's my wife, that's my partner. I thank God she's alive and I thank God for the two men who saved her," Lenny Cocco said.

At the scene, as the SUV was lifted to the surface, Lenny Cocco went up to DiGiovanna and gave him a big hug and a big kiss.

"A man like this doesn't know my wife and he jumps in and save her," Lenny Cocco said before planting a second smooch of DiGiovanna's cheek.

DiGiovanna's response was "no problem, brother."

Jennie Cocco told her husband and police that she was traveling on Concourse East at around 11:30 a.m. when the accelerator pedal became stuck.

It is safe to assume Lenny will serenade his lucky bride. Lenny is the lead singer of Lenny Cocco and Chimes. Now he's chiming in his gratitude and wants everyone to remember to cherish their loved ones this holiday season.
