Bank Bans Hats To Thwart 'Mad Hatter' Robber

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (CBS/AP) ― Bank patrons can't wear hats, hoods or other head-coverings when entering the Hudson City Savings Bank branch.

The Florham Park bank instituted a no-hats policy in hopes of thwarting the man known as the Hat Bandit. He's robbed at least 16 banks in North Jersey since September.

The brazen bandit is also known as the "Mad Hatter," named for the character who wore a top hat in the children's classic "Alice in Wonderland."

The suspect has worn an assortment of hats including a hunter's cap and baseball caps.

Chatham police also plan to ask banks to request that their customers remove head-coverings.

The robber last hit the Commerce Bank branch in Montclair earlier this month.
