Mayor Changes Tune On Involvement With Bloomberg LP

Just 2 Days Ago He Claimed Not To Know Of Employment Policies

NEW YORK (CBS) ― Mayor Michael Bloomberg wasn't commenting Thursday about charges his company, Bloomberg LP, condones sexual discrimination. But he is making it clear he still has a say in what goes on.

It was mum's the word Thursday at the Midtown headquarters of Bloomberg LP, the financial-information company owned by the mayor.

CBS 2 HD approached several employees at the company for comment, but mouths were shut.

"Oh, ah, I … I have no comment," one person said.

Added another: "I wouldn't dare comment on that. I'm sorry."

Three women joined in a federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission suit charging Bloomberg LP demoted women after they disclosed they were pregnant.

"I'm not going to dignify these lawsuits, these allegations with a response," Bloomberg said Thursday.

The suit accuses the mayor of helping to condone a culture of sexual discrimination at the company.

"I'm not involved in the day-to-day operations. I haven't had anything to do with running it or any discussions about any of their employment policies for a long time," a calm and confident Bloomberg said Tuesday.

But on Thursday the mayor changed his tune in a big way. He was clearly irritated.

"I am the majority owner and I'm absolutely entitled to talk to the senior people and know what's going on," Bloomberg said.

Over the years the company has faced a number of suits. What's the mayor's take on why?

"What's happening is because I am so visible it's obviously a target," he said.

The mayor insists the company will vigorously defend itself against the charges.

A Bloomberg LP spokesperson on Thursday called the accusations "bizarre".

She said the lawsuit appears to be, "An attempt to gain sensational stories in the press and force the company's hand and manipulate the EEOC case."
