Workers at Ground Zero have begun removing the ramp that led down into the footsteps of the World Trade Center.
The Pope and presidents have walked down the very same ramp. So have thousands of family members who lost their
loved ones on September 11 when Islamic terrorists attacked the Twin Towers.
Now it is being dismantled to make way for the foundation of the National September 11
Memorial and Museum.
For many who walk by the hallowed area, the dismantling of the 460-foot-long ramp is a bittersweet sign of progress.
"It's a show of progress, and that's a wonderful thing. I mean, the memorial is very important in New York. And the fact that the ramp's coming down is an indication that they're really making progress down there and something's happening," one resident said.
The
ramp, which was also used by construction workers and volunteers in the
aftermath of the attacks. Because of its historical
significance, a section of it will be preserved as part of the museum's
permanent collection.
Port Authority officials said the goal was to
complete the Memorial's plaza by the 10th anniversary of 9/11.
Officials said it will take about a month to take the ramp down.
