It's a sizzling new approach to anti-aging -- electrical impulses. CBS 2 HD learned a lot more on the new procedure that may just "shock" you.
Like many women Pat Knoxhorne wants to look younger -- but she doesn't want surgery.
"I have dark spots around the sides of my face and my folds are coming in a little deeper. And I was looking for a way to handle that without going
being cut and sewn," Knoxhorne said.
So she turned to a new anti-aging treatment called micro current, which uses electricity to turn back the hands of time.
"Micro current is the use of electrical stimulation. The same amount that our body produces to tone the muscles of the face, reduce fine lines and wrinkles," said licensed aesthetician Mica Hughes.
During the procedure two probes stimulate the muscles of the face and neck with electrical pulses. This is thought to stimulate the cells resulting in a more youthful appearance.
"We are electrical beings. All of our cells are fueled by electricity and fully charged cells keep us young," Hughes said.
The micro current technique was originally used for stroke patients with partial facial paralysis. The electrical currents were found to improve the tone of the tendons and help to even out the facial structure.
"Micro current is good for lifting and also increasing collagen and elastin, the two important elements for youthful skin," Hughes said.
For Sumayah Lowe, it's the natural approach that matters.
"My concern was not getting cut, not having to take any pills, inject anything into my body," Lowe said.
Knoxhorne said the procedure is painless.
"You really don't feel the current. It's almost like a sonogram. I think that would be the best comparison to make and sonograms don't hurt," Knoxhorne said.
The procedure takes about an hour and is generally done in a series of six weekly treatments. Results can be immediate, as was the case simply looking at Knoxhorne after her first session.
"Right after the procedure it's, umm, softer. I look fuller, plumper," she said.
She even had her hands done. And she was happy with the improvement.
The micro current procedure is FDA approved. Treatments start at $150 for each session.
But it is not for everyone. Check with your doctor before having any medical procedure.
