NYC Tries Out New, Quiet Hybrid Bus On 42nd Street

NEW YORK (AP) ― The New York City transit agency has begun a two-month trial of a 35-foot-long electric hybrid bus.

The DesignLine Hybrid bus took its inaugural drive Sunday, ferrying riders up and down 42nd Street.

If it tests well, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority plans to purchase several.

The hybrid bus uses an electric-powered turbine and standard diesel to get eight to 10 miles per gallon.

It is quieter, promises to reduce operating costs and can go 125 miles before the battery needs recharging.
