Man Accused Of Killing 2 Children Dies In Prison

Clifton Hall, 52, Suffered From Renal Failure; Was Awaiting Murder Trial

PLAINFIELD, N.J. (CBS) ― Authorities say a man awaiting trial for the 1985 sex assault and slaying of two children has died in prison.

The Union County prosecutor says Clifton Hall suffered from kidney failure.

The 52-year-old was supposed to stand trial in January in the deaths of 8-year-old Tyrone and 7-year-old Tina Urquhart.

Hall was charged after prosecutors said DNA evidence linked him to the crime. The same evidence was used to free another man who spent more than two decades in jail for the killings.

Bryon Halsey was put on trial for those murders and avoided the death penalty, but was sentenced to life in prison. Halsey spent 22 years in jail before evidence was tested for DNA and showed a match to Hall.

Hall was a neighbor in a rooming house where the children's mother lived with the man originally accused of killing them.

Hall was charged with the murders while serving time in prison for three sexual assaults in the 1990s.
