N.J. Nanny Caught On Camera Stomping Baby

Charged With Child Endangerment, Assault

UPPER SADDLE RIVER, N.J. (Bergen County Prosecutor's Office) ― Bergen County police arrested a nanny was arrested after a video camera caught her attacking a five-month-old baby.

The parents of the child set up a camera in their home in Upper Saddle River, N.J., so they could watch how their nanny, 51-year-old Manjula Patel, cared for their baby. According to the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office, the camera recorded Patel "hitting, slapping, shaking, and stomping the child."

The parents returned home on October 11, 2006 and noticed the baby was acting lethargic. After viewing the video tape, they called for an ambulance.

Medical personnel at the Hackensack University Medical Center found the baby had a broken clavicle, two fractured wrists, a broken rib, and numerous bruises.

A more detailed examination will be conducted Thursday, and the baby remains at the hospital.

Patel is being held on $200,000 bail. She is denied contact with the victim or family, and was ordered to surrender her passport.

Her first court appearance is scheduled for Friday, October 13 at 9:00 a.m. in Hackensack's Superior Court.
