A New Jersey man -- who reportedly was estranged from his 30-year-old son for most of his life -- is going to court to fight for half of the $2.9 million benefit awarded after he died at the World Trade Center.
Leon Caldwell and his ex-wife, Elsie Goss-Caldwell, will appear in a Brooklyn courtroom Wednesday to determine whether to divide the death benefits awarded to the estate of their son, Kenneth Caldwell. The money is in escrow.
He was a technology manager at the World Trade Center and was killed in the 9-11 attacks. He was single with no will, so his mother is his estate's administrator.
Goss-Caldwell, who lives in Philadelphia, said her ex-husband abandoned her and their two sons when Kenneth was 2, and had little contact with him.
Kenneth Caldwell's estate was awarded the money by the Victims' Compensation Fund.
