A recent report says the number of child-abuse complaints climbed 20 percent in the last fiscal year.
Sharman Stein, a spokeswoman for the Administration for Children's Services, attributes the record increase to greater public awareness after the death of 7-year-old Nixzmary Brown in January.
According to the annual financial report issued by Comptroller William Thompson, more than 61,000 complaints were made, a record.
The previous high was nearly 58,000 complaints, recorded in 1998.
