Notable New Yorker: Scott Stringer
NEW YORK (CBS) ―
It is one of East Harlem's favorite bakeries, and one of many places featured in the new cookbook "Go Green For Harlem," the brainchild of Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer.
"It really came from the neighborhood because when we started the Go Greem East Harlem initiative, the goal was to bring the community together and have a real discussion about how we can reduce asthma rates, diabetes rates, and really create a healthy neighborhood. So it's through the process of reaching out to restaurant tours and local community leaders and talk about how we involve businesses the cook book was born and its been an amazing significant moment in the lives the the people in this community," Stringer explained.
The asthma rates and diabetes rates are significantly higher in Harlem and East Harlem, so the mission was established to feature the very best and healthiest Harlem has to offer.
"We are going into the kitchen where all the magic happens," And that includes Savoy Bakery, owned by Brian Ghau.
"It was a little difficult in choosing the recipe that we decided to submit to the cookbook because obviously with a bakery you associate it with sweets, carbs, heavy dessert items, but lucky for us we have very light and healthy desserts with not too much sugar. Instead of using butter cakes we use sponge cakes. But even still I thought about the premise of the book and realized that not too many people too many nights would take the time and the effort to make one of our cakes at home," Ghau said.
That's the point, to get those in the community to think about healthy alternatives and enjoy what's all around them.
"We picked this neighborhood because this is the place with the children of the highest diabetes obesity problems in the neighborhoods and we figured if we can come into the community and really involve the neighborhood and reduce the ashstma rates reduce the diabetes rates use the cookbook build and asthma center create trees in the neighborhood we can can use this as model for the rest of the city and that's what Go Green is. So I hope we can have Go Green for East Harlem, Go Green for Manhattan, Go Green Brooklyn, that's our ultimate goal," Stringer said.
