NYC Expands Text Message Alerts
NEW YORK (CBS) ―
The city is expanding a pilot program that sends emergency alerts to New Yorkers by e-mail, text message and voice mail.
The program is called Notify NYC. It was launched as a trial in four areas of the city in 2007. On May 28, it will expand citywide.
New Yorkers can then sign up to receive the alerts that provide information about emergency events like AMBER alerts and natural disasters. Residents also can sign up for advisories about less-severe disruptions like transit problems, utility outages and public health notifications.
The program also will offer the option of getting non-emergency advisories, like public school closures and changes to street parking rules.
Mayor Bloomberg announced the completion of the initial four-area trial program of Notify NYC on May 18.
