Report: NY Sen. Espada Owes $60K In Campaign Fines
ALBANY (AP) ―
Sen. Pedro Espada Jr., a Bronx Democrat slated to take a top state Senate leadership position in January, owes more than $60,000 in fines to New York City's Campaign Finance Board.
The fines date back to Espada's 2001 run for Bronx borough president. They're in addition to $6,000 in state fines he could face for not registering his campaign for senate this year.
Espada is appealing the city fines.
Espada is part of a Senate leadership team assembled behind closed doors on Thursday in which he would be majority leader and Sen. Malcolm Smith of Queens would be president pro tempore.
However, some veteran Democratic senators were upset by the deal, and the conference was meeting in Manhattan on Saturday to discuss it.
