NYPD Evacuates Building After Finding Pipe Bombs
BROOKLYN (CBS) ―
A Brooklyn Heights apartment building was evacuated after police found a pipe bomb in one of the units.
Penny Kaufman was evacuated from her apartment early Sunday morning following a frightening find in the unit above her. She awoke to police at her door and her neighbor's dog barking.
"Knowing now what I know now about what was in the apartment, I am extremely upset," Kaufman told CBS 2 HD.
Kaufman was with police when they responded to the apartment where a 31-year-old man suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound. That's when they found at least one explosive device in his apartment.
Kaufman says she doesn't know much about the man who was injured.
Residents at 58 Remsen St. and other nearby buildings had no idea what was going on when they were forced to evacuate in the wee hours of the morning.
"I just heard the dog barking and my neighbor in the hallway and we were asked to evacuate," said Alan Brasunas.
"I came down in my pajamas and there was a policeman and he said this side of the street had to evacuate, but he didn't tell me why," added Judy Hazen.
After hours in the frigid cold, residents were allowed back inside, never fully sure what had really happened, but just grateful no one else was injured.
Police say the man was treated at a local hospital for a gunshot wound to his hand. He was then taken in for questioning. So far, his name has not been released.
