Group Of Officers Sue NJ Police Chief
NEWARK (CBS) ―
A New Jersey police chief is being sued by several current and former officers who claim he used his office for financial and political gain.
The suit, filed Wednesday in federal court in Newark, claims Hackensack Chief Ken Zisa "extorted" money from officers to support his candidacy in legislative races and candidates for other public and union offices. It claims officers who resisted ended up with undesirable assignments or were denied promotions.
Zisa, a former assemblyman who has led the 115-member department since 1995, declined to discuss specific allegations, saying he has not seen the suit. But he told The Record of Bergen County it was "political" and described the officers as disgruntled employees unhappy with their assignments.
"Zisa also instituted unlawful disciplinary charges against police officers for their failure to support the candidacies," according to the complaint filed.
