A dramatic scene unfolded in Brooklyn Saturday as an attempted armed robbery ends with gunfire in the streets, and a suspect shot dead.
The chaos erupted at an auto repair shop in East Flatbush.
The brazen armed robbery was halted by a man witnesses call a hero. The off-duty police officer shot and killed one suspect, though another got away.
There were at least seven customers inside the repair business on Glenwood Road, one of them an off-duty detective getting his personal car repaired.
Two men entered the shop, and one of the men pulled a gun and ordered everyone to get on the ground.
When the detective pulled his gun, police say one of the suspects fired at him. The detective fired back, killing the man.
"He's a hero," witness Ann Phillip said.
"I think he's very brave, and I'm very proud of him because we can't have these criminals walking around trying to rob people," neighbor Carol Hinds said. "So it was very good and fortunate that he was on the scene."
The detective, however, was not done. He started to chase the suspect, and another 10 rounds were fired during the chase in the street.
Police say the suspect escaped in a white SUV.
"[It's scary] to see that I could have been walking down the street," Hinds said. "Tomorrow is Mother's Day it could have been anyone."
The detective was hospitalized for observation but is said to be physically uninjured.
