Suspect Critical After Police-Involved Shooting
NEW YORK (CBS) ―
New York City police said an officer has shot a man who confronted officers with a loaded handgun, and the man is in critical condition.
The man's identity was not immediately released. He was taken to Lincoln Hospital after the shooting shortly before 4 a.m. Saturday in the South Bronx.
Police said officers were chasing the 47-year-old man when they spotted his loaded .380-caliber handgun.
Police said the man ran back toward the officers, and one of them shot him in the torso, left arm and right hand.
Police said the man's handgun was recovered at the scene.
It wasn't immediately clear why police initially began chasing him.
The NYPD has a uniformed police force of at least 37,000.
