Cop Shoots Man For Allegedly Attacking His Family
NYPD: Officer Identified Himself Prior To Shooting In The Bronx
BRONX (CBS) ―
An off-duty NYPD officer has shot a man to death at his Bronx home.
According to police, 47-year-old Carlos Rios followed a woman and her 3-year-old daughter into an elevator just after 11p.m. Saturday. Rios then grabbed them from behind and flashed his gun.
The off-duty officer heard their screams and ran to their aid. Neighbors told CBS 2 HD they heard rapid gun shots.
After being hit, the suspect stumbled outside the building and collapsed on the sidewalk. He later died at an area hospital.
"We have witnesses that hear the officer say 'Police: don't move. Witnesses that hear the woman scream," NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly said.
Police located the Rios' weapon, and are now searching the sewer's catch basin for more evidence.
One nearby resident told CBS 2 HD she isn't surprised an incident like this happened here.
"For the past three months, we've had several incidents right around here," she said.
The off-duty officer, the mother, and her daughter were all taken to area hospitals.
Police say the shooting is still under investigation.
