Man Dies Saving Friend's Child From Drowning

NORWALK, Ct. (CBS) ― A 10-year-old boy nearly drowned at Deering Pond in Norwalk, and a family friend died trying to save him.

Williams Carpio said his son is having a tough time emotionally. "He say: 'oh it's my fault'."

Memorial Day afternoon, 10-year-old Davidson Carpio waded into the pond while his father fished with a group of friends.

Davidson was not wearing a life jacket, and suddenly found himself in trouble. "He lost his footing and subsequently fell in, and the tide just pulled him away and they did jump in after him," said Lt. Angela Walsh of Norwalk police.

Carpio and his friend, 20-year-old Jose Igardera, went into the water to save the boy.

Witnesses said Igardera went underwater three times to push the little boy up so he could breathe. The third time, he didn't return to the surface.

"He tried to rescue him, and he lose the life about that," said witness Marco Canhui.

The father and son managed to tread water until rescuers arrived.

Igardera was found face down in the water 30 yards away and declared dead at Norwalk Hospital.

Before leaving the hospital, 10-year-old Davidson asked for one last chance to visit with the man who died trying to save him.

Williams Carpio said the boy wanted to say goodbye and thank you. "He go on in, he kiss him, he say 'Thank you so much for saving my life'," he explained.

This had been a favorite fishing spot for the father and son, but Carpio said after what happened Monday, they'll never return.
