NYC Beachgoers Head Out For Fun In The Sun

NEW YORK (CBS) ― Early rain made it a day at the beach that almost wasn't.

"Yeah we actually hid over and kind of took cover and we were going to leave, and just look, the sun came out. It's beautiful," said Patricia Herrera.

"I think it's been raining for 65 days straight now so we haven't had an opportunity and were not going to let the rain stop us," said Mike Johnston.

It wasn't quite 65 days in a row, but June was one of the wettest in years.

Friday was a day to make up for lost time.

"It's just amazing. A lot of people in the water and it just feels like summertime already," said Steve Hatzakis.

No matter how nice the weather, some people just can't sit still. This beach is full of surfers, sunbathers and at least one little girl who might have a future as a builder.

"It's like you have to make sand castles and its like working and working and working. And right now over there we've been making like a big hole," said Rebecca Tscherne.

Graham Luongos' day at the beach boils down to a simple philosophy. "When the wave's coming down, just ride it."

"Sunny skies are heaven. Sunny skies mean money," said Jerry Perich, Irish Circle owner.

Weather means even more to businessmen like Perich. They need the clouds to stay away.

"This is one of the worst years, because of the weather. This is the worst weather I've seen coming into the summer," he said.

A few people you won't hear complaining about bad weather are surfers.

"Actually I like it when you got storms kicking off and you got to climb up off the pier and jump in because it's so big," said surfer Brian Goldberg.

"It rained a little but we got through it. But well get through every other day in the summer that it rains cause were at Rockaway. And we need the beach," said Tscherne.

The beach bums have been waiting. This weekend the New York Parks Department estimates a million of them will be out for their day in the sun.
