CBS 2 has learned the principal at P.S. 91 in Brooklyn has been reassigned after an 8-year-old girl accused the school's janitor of raping and sexually assaulting her inside a bathroom multiple times over a month's time in the school's basement.
Sources say Principal Solomon Long was reassigned because he's accused of doing nothing about another possible prior case involving same 8-year-old girl being sexually abused by another adult.
Parents are applauding the move, and say Long had sent out a letter advising the school community recently about how safe P.S. 91 Elementary is. "It's good, he needs to be transferred if it's for that. He needs to be transferred," Sandra Simon, whose child attends the school.
Other parents wonder if the principal had taken action the first time, might the victim have avoided the trauma? "Who are we to trust if we can't leave our kids in school without them being molested? If he's aware of a prior situation and this occurred Agni he should be ousted or fired," one parent told CBS 2.
The news comes on the same day that the janitor accused, 58-year-old Francis Evelyn, who has worked at the school for 19 years, was arraigned in court on multiple charges. The victim reported to her mother several days ago that she had been raped and sodomized in the basement of the school multiple times, and pointed out Evelyn as the attacker.
Many who know Evelyn well were shocked by the charges. "He talks to everyone, jokes with everybody, but sometimes people have a dark side and you don't see it," one of Evelyn's neighbors told CBS 2.
Evelyn, who lives with his wife and daughter, is charged with rape, a criminal sex act, sex abuse and endangering the welfare of a child.
The Department of Education says Evelyn has been with the department since 1988 without incident. He has been suspended without pay.
