A Brooklyn elementary school janitor has been charged with raping a young student multiple times over the past month. He was arraigned Tuesday morning, and police say the young victim pointed her attacker out.
It was a stressful school day for parents at P.S. 91 in the Wingate section of Brooklyn. Laquana Jones dropped her 10-year-old daughter off Tuesday morning, upset about news about what allegedly happened at the school.
The janitor at the school, 58-year-old Francis Evelyn, was arrested overnight, accused of repeatedly raping an 8-year-old girl inside the school.
"It's very upsetting. I watched the news yesterday, and it's upsetting to see. My daughter goes to this school, and nobody knew about this," said Jones.
"I asked her did he ever touch her. She says he was friendly; he talked to her friends. I am just questioning her to make sure he hasn't done it to her either," Jones said.
Ashanti Jones, her daughter, said, "He is a nice person. He always used to play with the girls in my class."
She added, "He always used to give them candy and stuff, but he never did nothing to me."
Only one staff member had something to say about the suspect who has worked at the school for 20 years.
"He's a great person," the school employee said.
Evelyn is accused of raping the child in the basement of the school. Police said that the abuse has been going on since February 1.
Many parents say one of the biggest concerns is that they didn't get the information directly from the school. And now they want to know why.
Naushod Grant learned the news as he dropped his daughter off at school Tuesday.
"I'm angry because it could happen to her if it happened to the other girl," said Grant.
Evelyn, who lives with his wife and daughter, is charged with rape, a criminal sex act, sex abuse and endangering the welfare of a child.
The Department of Education says Evelyn has been with the department since 1988 without incident. He has been suspended without pay.
Crisis counselors have been sent to the school.
