Sixteen-year-old Samuel Balkany was attacked Friday night outside his friend's house on Carroll Street in Crown Heights. He says five black teenagers pummeled him for no reason, possibly using a rock to smash his head.
Balkany has a staple closing a deep wound.
After punching and kicking him for several minutes, the group left laughing, he said.
Police are investigating the beating as a possible bias attack. Community residents say this is not an isolated incident. They claim a half hour before the attack, 15 black teenagers assaulted three Jewish teens only a few blocks away.
"Attack on Friday when we cannot carry money or cell phone for religious reasons
strictly racially motivated," said Rabbi Ari Goodman, Chabad of Brunswick.
These attacks, several last summer and in the last two weeks, are not general assaults by the black community against the Jewish community, says the head of a Hasidic street patrol.
"It may be an initiation for some gang, black and Jewish (people) get along," said Yossi Stern from the Shimra Patrol.
Some black residents agree.
The police have sent the hate crime task force to Brooklyn Avenue. They believe the attack on Samuel balkany is an isolated incident and expect to arrest his attackers.
