Boy Admitted To NYC School Named For Hero Uncle

QUEENS (AP) ― New York City's Department of Education has bent the rules to allow a 9/11 firefighter's nephew to attend a school that bears the fallen hero's name.

When Christopher Echevarria was born 4 years ago, he was named for his uncle.

Christopher A. Santora was a firefighter at Engine Company 54. He also had worked as a substitute teacher. After his death at the World Trade Center, Public School 222 was renamed in his honor.

The kindergartner was initially denied entrance because Santora School is crowded, and preference is given to Jackson Heights kids. Christopher lives in another Queens neighborhood, Long Island City.

The family appealed. Education Department spokesman Andrew Jacob says an exception was made because the case is so unique.
