New York City Will Have 7,400 New Teachers In 2007

NEW YORK (AP) ― Rookie teachers entering the New York City school system got a pep talk from the schools chancellor and head of the teacher's union. Many of the new teachers were at a meeting at the Javits Center yesterday.

School begins on September 4th.

Chancellor Joel Klein told the teachers that when they are having tough days - just keep thinking of the lives you're changing. New York City's teaching ranks have a high attrition rate. The Department of Education says about one-third of new teachers leave after three years.

But Klein says the attrition rates are going down.

New teachers earn an average starting salary of $43,000. About 2,000 of these teachers will get $3,400 bonuses for going into high-need schools.
