William Bell, the father of Sean Bell spoke about the police shooting that claimed his son's life Sunday afternoon - a day after marchers filled Fifth Avenue to protest the shooting.
Sean Bell had aspired to be a professional baseball player and had been called to try out for the L.A. Dodgers, when he died in a hail of 50 police bullets on his wedding day last month, William Bell said.
William bell spoke with a depth of loss only a parent can feel. "No one should lose a child. I don't care who you are or what you are, know what I'm saying? You're not supposed to lose a child and that's the hurting part about it," he said.
Through his attorneys, William Bell added his voice to the growing call for a special prosecutor. Queens D.A. Richard Brown, they insist, must step aside.
Bell family attorney Neville Mitchell said, "I'm sure he's a fine man. I'm sure he's a fine family man. I'm sure he's loved by many. We just believe that a prosecutor who marches in lock step with the New York City Police Department is not capable of stepping away from this investigation and doing it appropriately."
It's a claim others have made as well. At Jamaica Hospital on Sunday, well-known police brutality victim Abner Louima met with Joseph Guzman, who was still recovering from the 19 bullet wounds he received when his friend Sean Bell was killed.
Louima said police are simply too aggressive in minority communities. "We want definitely for the NYPD to change the way they are policing. They need better training."
