Call them Segway cops. Long Beach police will be using the Segway personal transporter on the boardwalk this season.
Long Beach bought two of the $6,200 scooter-type devices after officers tested them out.
The large two-wheel transporter, which uses gyroscopic sensor technology, raises the rider about eight inches off the ground for better visibility and has a handlebar into which the rider leans to move the machine forward or backward, left or right.
Lt. Bruce Meyer said Segways are ideal for the boardwalk because it gives riders a better view of crowds. They also allow the officer to cover the length of the boardwalk in about 10 minutes.
Meyer said Long Beach police are the first to use Segways on Long Island.
