Queens Family Still Surprised Over Sextuplets

NEW YORK (CBS) ― The sextuplets born at Mount Sinai Medical Center three weeks ago are still in the neo-natal intensive care unit. Doctors said the four boys and two girls are doing well, but their parents are still adjusting to the surprise.

"I cry because I never imagined their faces, they're so cute, they smile, they move, they open their eyes, they hear me," said mother Digna Carpio.

No pictures yet, of Digna Carpio's babies who were born 15-weeks early, each one weighing just a pound and a half.

Their older brother, Jhan Carlos Carpio, said: "I wanted only one baby, but God gave me six for no reason. I think I pray a lot in church so I think that's why."

Victor Carpio remembers the day his wife broke the news to him. "She told me it's not three, it's not four, it's not five, it's six babies. I started laughing but at the same time I started crying," he said.

The family lives in a three bedroom house in Whitestone, Queens, and the tears were over how they would afford everything it takes to raise sextuplets, starting with six cribs. Eric Graff from Planets Kids explained, "$300 each, times six equals $1800. They need a mattress for that crib, that's $200 a crib, that's another $1200."

"The family is going to need a bunch of carseats. Graff says to get six good ones it'll cost around $900, and then you've got the stroller. It's tough to find one that seats six babies but you can order one for $1600."

The Carpios said they're taking things one day at a time, starting with naming their babies who had been known as A through F. Now their names are Justin, Jezreel, Joel, Jaden, Genesis and Danelia.

Big brother Jhan Carlos is ready for the job of a lifetime. "My job is to take care of them and if they do something wrong I'll take care of it. I hope they don't destroy the house," he laughed.

Carlos said he can't wait to bring his four brothers and two sisters home, which will happen in about 2.5 months.
