A high school sophomore was murdered Tuesday night inside her Brooklyn apartment. The person accused of stabbing her to death also lived in the same home.
Juliet Waugh, the victim's paternal grandmother, had a photo of her granddaughter, 16-year-old Shannon Braithwaite, who was stabbed to death.
"I feel real rotten. I'm hurt, and the worst thing, her father's not here," Waugh said.
The suspect, 15-year-old Tiana Browne, known to the victim, was formally arrested Wednesday. The incident happened Tuesday inside the apartment where Shannon lived with her family on Empire Boulevard.
The teen's body was discovered by her mother who came home around 4:30 p.m. Her daughter was just inside the door. The neighbor in this apartment heard the mother's screams.
"She opened the door and saw her daughter and started screaming," the neighbor said. "Just heard the mother screaming, 'Oh god, oh god."
The girl's aunt described the scene.
"She tried to open the apartment door and the chain was on the door," Brathwaite said. "She was here lying on the floor."
The aunt herself was screaming after she heard the news, that her niece had been slashed to death by another girl in the apartment.
"She cut her in her face and sliced her neck," Waugh said.
Relatives said Shannon's mother had recently taken in the child, now charged as the killer. The motive for the killing is unclear.
Browne is being charged with intentional murder and weapons possession.
A candlelight vigil for Shannon Braithwaite was held Wednesday night in front of her home.
