Police Hunt For Starrett City Mugger

11 Women Mugged In 8 Weeks

BROOKLYN (CBS) ― Police are searching for a mugger targeting women in the Starrett City housing complex in Brooklyn.

The suspect mugged 11 women between the ages of 47 and 62 in the last eight weeks. Officials said he strikes his victim on the head before grabbing her purse and fleeing the scene.

Most of the attacks took place in elevators and lobbies.

Residents are being told to be on the lookout."The letter was telling us to be aware there are robberies and mugging and talking about somebody mugging you know other people and some other buildings but it happened to us that same night we got the letter under the door," resident Theresa Garland said.

The NYPD released a sketch of the suspect, whom one victim described as surprisingly nice looking and well-dressed.

Garland described what happened to her neighbor. "They were in the elevator. She said that he took and he grabbed her purse, but she had it to the side. He grabbed and back of her, he knocked her down, and he took her purse. Then she said she was all bruised up."

Police don't have surveillance videotape of the suspect yet. If you have any information, police want to hear from you. Call the crime stopper number at 1-800-577-TIPS.
