CBS 2 HD: Race For The Cure Breast Cancer Special
by Dr. Holly Phillips
(CBS)
An estimated 178,480 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to occur among women in the United States during 2007. An estimated 40,460 women will die from breast cancer. It is estimated that 2,030 men will be diagnosed and 450 men will die of breast cancer this year.
Nancy G. Brinker promised her dying sister, Susan G. Komen, that she would do everything in her power to end breast cancer forever.
In 1982, that promise became Susan G. Komen for the Cure and launched the global breast cancer movement.
Today, Komen for the Cure is the world's largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists fighting to save lives, empower people, ensure quality care for all and mobilize science to find a cure.
Thanks to events like the Komen Race for the Cure, they have invested nearly $1 billion to fulfill our promise, becoming the largest source of nonprofit funds dedicated to the fight against breast cancer in the world.
In this CBS 2 special report on breast cancer, you'll find links to interviews with doctors speaking about breast cancer and breast cancer survivors.
Also, Englewood Hospital is offering a "Talking To Your Children About Your Breast Cancer" DVD that's available in English, Spanish and Korean. For a copy, call the hospital's Child Life Expert Michelle Brauntuch at (201) 894-3635.
