Buffalo Girl, 9, Dies Of Swine Flu

BUFFALO, N.Y. (CBS) ― A second Buffalo public school student has died of swine flu.

Schools Superintendent Dr. James A. Williams released a statement of sympathy Saturday. The school district didn't identify the student, but her mother told reporters the victim was 9-year-old Maya Harden.

The Charles R. Drew Science Magnet School fourth-grader was critically ill with the virus for more than a week. The girl's mother, Akea (ah-KEE'-ah) Hollingsworth, says her daughter died Saturday after doctors "tried everything to get her lungs circulating."

A 15-year-old boy who attended the Harvey Austin School died of swine flu June 20.

Some other children in the state have died of the virus, and hundreds have been hospitalized. But most deaths have been among people between ages 25 and 64.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, swine influenza is a respiratory disease caused by type A influenza virus that regularly causes outbreaks of influenza in pigs.
