Police: NY Gunman Likely Killed By Return Fire
SYRACUSE, N.Y. (CBS) ―
Syracuse authorities say the armed intruder found dead after a shootout is a 32-year-old parolee evidently killed by return fire from police.
Syracuse Police Chief Gary Miguel (mih-GEL') says he was Charles Jennings of Syracuse. Miguel says Jennings was released from jail on Oct. 15 after serving time for a drug conviction.
Police say Jennings traded gunfire with Syracuse police after a home invasion robbery in an apartment building late Sunday night. A SWAT team found him dead in a stairwell around 4 a.m. Monday.
Miguel says it appears Jennings was killed by police, although the incident remains under investigation.
Police used an armored vehicle to rescue six people from the apartment building. They rescued a seventh person from the roof.
Syracuse is around 234 miles northwest of New York City.
